A No-Stress Guide from a Des Moines Photographer
Let’s be honest: coordinating outfits for a family photo session can feel like a lot. But it doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few simple tips (and a mindset shift), getting everyone dressed and ready can actually be kind of fun.
Here’s my best advice for what to wear for your session, with comfort, personality, and timeless style in mind.
1. Neutrals First, Then Add Personality
Start with neutrals like cream, tan, brown, gray, or denim as your base. These tones photograph beautifully and work in any season. From there, build in texture and a touch of color such as soft pinks, olive green, mustard yellow, or some pretty pastels. I usually recommend steering away from harsh reds and bright oranges, which can be tricky on skin tones and tend to pull focus. There’s always room for nuance, especially depending on the season, but a soft, cohesive palette usually sets the tone best.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in matching white shirts and jeans. Instead of matching exactly, aim to coordinate. Lay out your outfits together and look for a flow. Maybe your daughter’s floral dress pulls in the color of your son’s shirt, or your sweater complements your partner’s khakis.

3. Think Movement and Texture
Movement makes magic in photos. Flowy dresses, layered cardigans, and linen shirts add depth and softness. Knits, gauze, denim, and corduroy all bring in beautiful texture, especially when we’re shooting in natural light.
4. Consider the Location and Season
Are we running barefoot in a grassy field? Cuddled up on the couch for a cozy in-home session? Your setting should guide your clothing choices. For outdoor fall sessions, think warm layers and boots. For summer, keep things light and breathable.
5. Keep Logos and Neon at Bay
Skip big logos and graphics. They can distract from your faces and connection. The same goes for neon colors, which tend to reflect harshly on skin in photos. Stick with timeless patterns like subtle stripes, florals, or solids.
6. Prioritize Comfort (Yes, Really!)
The best photos happen when you feel good. If your kiddo can’t move in those new jeans or you’re tugging at your dress the whole session, it’ll show. Choose outfits you can move in, sit down in, and cuddle in. When you’re comfortable, joy comes naturally.

7. Get Inspired and Lay It Out
Once you’ve gathered some pieces, lay everything out on the bed to see how it looks together. Take a picture. Seeing it all as a collection helps you spot anything that feels off. And if you’re stuck, send me your options. I’m happy to help you choose.
Bonus Tip: Be Yourself
Ultimately, these photos are about your real family; your connection, your personalities, and your season of life. If someone insists on wearing their favorite tutu or hat, let them. Sometimes the most “imperfect” outfits make for the most memorable photos.
